Today is Columbus day. Do you remember why this day is celebrated in the USA and many other countries and who was Christopher Columbus?
But some people believe there is no reason to celebrate and so this day is also met with great protest throughout the Americas. Why?

Cristhoper Colombus discovered America on that day in 1492. He was an Italian working 4 Spanish queen.
If Americans want to celebrate this day, they can if they want. I am Slovene, not American, so I don't care.

Columbus day is celebrated because of the discovery of America. Christopher Columbus was the one who discovered it. He was italian, but he worked for the Spanish crown.
I think it's also celebrated in other countries because the discovery of America changed many things in the lives of other people (and not just the Americans) as well.
In my opinion many don't think that this day is anything to celebrate because when the settlers came to America they also brought diseases (and death), a new religion and so many other bad things that killed and/or changed many Native Americans.

I think that this isn't the only day people celebrate 'without reason'. The truth is that discovered of America brought many bad things, but many good things too ... If we celebrate days that brought many bad things it means that we know what has happened and we aren't one of those people who wanted to forget all bad things and want to believe that we have done only good thing and that all things in the world are only good: in the past there has happened many bad things that we want to forget, but we can't change it: we can only change the future ...
Who thinks that there's nothing good in the discovery of America, doesn't have to celebrate it ... I will celebrate what I want to and he can what he want: that's why we called that our countries are democratic. :)
Columbus day is celebrated because that's when C. Columbus discovered America. Personally, I think it's alright to acknowledge the "discovery" .. although the Native Americans discovered it way before him, right? :) Anyway, apart from that, I don't think there is much to celebrate, because of the reasons Katarina already listed. I know I don't celebrate it, never have, never will. Every person should decide what matters to them and then act accordingly.
Columbus day is celebrated because of the discovery of America in 1492 by Columbus.I think that it is "right" to celebrate it....well what I am trying to say is that it is good to have a day when you remember that your country was discovered.
I agree with Lidija and Laurel. Day is celebrated in the USA, because Colombus discovered America in 1492, he was an Italian who worked for the Spanish queen. I think people can celebrate what ever they want. For some people that 's important day and for some not, so one of them will celebrate that day and other won 't.
I agree with everybody.:) I think people have right to celebrate whatever they want. No matter who they are and where do they live.
